If you’d told me years ago that I’d one day own a business in civil construction, I probably would’ve laughed. Entrepreneurship wasn’t part of my plan. In fact, it wasn’t even on my radar. But as life has shown me, some of the best opportunities for professional development arise when we least expect them.

Starting the Journey
"I never thought I would run my own business, especially not a big trucking company," I often tell people when they ask how I got started. My journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t a calculated career move—it was a leap of faith. At the time, I saw a gap in the market and decided to take a chance. What began as a single truck soon grew into a thriving business, and along the way, I discovered my capacity for leadership.
The early days weren’t without their challenges. I was juggling a newborn, a growing family, and the demands of a new business. I vividly remember working late into the night, managing operations while making sure my kids felt loved and cared for. It was exhausting, but it taught me invaluable lessons about time management, perseverance, and adaptability.
Lessons in Professional Growth
Running my business became one of the greatest teachers in my life. I learned how to manage a team, make tough decisions, and stay calm under pressure. Each obstacle I faced—whether it was logistical issues, financial hurdles, or personal challenges—shaped me into the leader I am today.
One of the most profound lessons I learned is that professional development is a continuous journey. You’re never done learning, and every challenge presents an opportunity to grow. For me, this meant embracing feedback, investing in my skills, and staying open to new ideas.
Embracing the Unexpected
Looking back, I realize that my path to entrepreneurship wasn’t just about building a business—it was about building myself. It was about discovering what I was capable of when I stepped out of my comfort zone. The lessons I learned in those early years have stayed with me, influencing how I approach challenges and opportunities alike.
Key Takeaway: Professional Development Often Comes Unexpectedly
Sometimes, the most significant opportunities for growth arise when we take risks and embrace the unknown. My journey as an “accidental entrepreneur” has shown me that professional development is about much more than career advancement—it’s about learning, growing, and becoming the best version of yourself.
